I was going to write "Hey, look, I'm a nerd." But now, it's hard to justify that title with a definition like that. But alas, I am a nerd, a geek, a gamer and internet whore. I like video games and MMORPGS, I like reading about wormholes and about the possibility of life on other planets. But I also like music. One of the reasons I begun to really listen to whole albums as opposed to single tracks is because when I played <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/">World of Warcraft</a> (yes, WoW, I played it. I played it hard.) I would throw on an album and just leave it. By doing this I discovered an untold amount of music by just letting my playlists play or letting shuffle to the work for a couple of hours.<br /><br />Ok, so now you might be asking, why the fuck is Blaz (which happened to be my name for two years on Azshara/Mug'thol [70 Warlock]) admitting that he is a loser. Well it's because I recently fell in love with a song by the artist known as <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.datarockmusic.com/">Datarock</a>.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">/end </span><span style="font-weight: bold;" class="me">rather pointless ramble...</span><br /><br />So I know that Datarock as been around for sometime, their debut album <span style="font-style: italic;">Datarock </span><span style="font-style: italic;">Datarock</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>was released in 2005 on the bands own label <a href="http://www.yaprecords.com/">YAP</a> (Young Aspiring Professionals) and was met with generally favorable reviews; the deity's at Pitchfork gave it a 7.8 which isn't so bad. One of my favorite Datarock tracks, and the one that caused all this rambling, is entitled <span style="font-style: italic;">Computer Camp Love </span>and is probably the best pseudo-cover of a song from the movie <span style="font-style: italic;">Grease. </span>Yes you read correctly, it's a pseudo-cover from the movie <span style="font-style: italic;">Grease</span>. It's not a true cover but it uses elements of the song and you can tell it's sort of a tribute to the song <span style="font-style: italic;">Summer Lovin'</span>. Rather brilliant if I can say so myself. So, if you are a self respecting "nerd" I urge you to listen to the track below and have yourself a laugh. Listen, life's alright outside the screen...it's just better inside.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Datarock - Computer Camp Love</span><br /><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf" id="audioplayer1" height="24" width="290"><param name="movie" value="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&bg=0xf8f8f8&leftbg=0xeeeeee&lefticon=0x666666&rightbg=#3acc00&rightbghover=0x000000&righticon=0x3acc00&righticonhover=0x3acc00&text=0x666666&slider=0xcccccc&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0x666666&loader=0xCC0000&soundFile=http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/10/24/1538176/03%20Computer%20Camp%20Love.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object><p></p><br />Cheers,<br />MF Blazdead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-79542909895122071802007-12-25T11:51:00.000-08:002007-12-25T11:52:02.820-08:00It's Christmas Time!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://bp0.blogger.com/__MEK6WKILes/R3FWUFttNTI/AAAAAAAAAbo/6dYXBbdBnlY/s1600-h/christmassplashtp.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/__MEK6WKILes/R3FWUFttNTI/AAAAAAAAAbo/6dYXBbdBnlY/s320/christmassplashtp.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5147990752192443698" border="0" /></a>So it's christmas time and everyone is probably opening presents and getting nice and toasty with their families and bottles of spiced rum.<br /><br />Spiced rum, Santas favorite. I was young, I was bold and I certainly would never dance at a disco. If you were to hand me tracks from <a href="http://www.myspace.com/girltalkmusic">Girl Talk</a> or <a href="http://www.theknife.net/">The Knife</a> I would scoff at you and give you an <a href="http://www.myspace.com/atdi">At the Drive-In</a> record or the <a href="http://www.deathfromabove1979.com/">DFA '79</a> (RIP) demo. Fast-forward a few years and I can dance with the best of them. In fact, dancing to the likes of <a href="http://www.myspace.com/etjusticepourtous">Justice</a> or <a href="http://www.mstrkrft.com/">MSTRKRFT</a> has become a well enjoyed weekend pastime for me. I have no one else to thank but my dance-loving friends from university and little place in Ottawa called Zaphod Beeblebrox. Don't get me wrong bands, like ATDI and DFA still top my favourite artist lists but dance artists have become a mainstay on my ipizzle.<br /><br />The electroclash/dance artist from Melbourne, Aussieland known as <a href="http://www.myspace.com/musclesmusic">Muscles</a> is the latest addition to my ever-expanding music collection. His late 2007 release <span style="font-style: italic;">Guns Babes Lemonade </span>is an eclectic mix of pop songs and dance floor anthems, all with brilliantly laid out tongue-in-cheek sing-alongs that blur the line between laptop pop and arena chanting. On the album's stand-out track (and my personal favourite, the song that got me hooked) <span style="font-style: italic;">Ice Cream</span>, Muscles juxtaposes club violence "he could have a knife / stab me in the gut / bleeding on the floor / shoulda kept my mouth shut" with dancing with our shirts off " i just wanna dance with my shirt off".<br /><br />Bloody brilliant. Electro-pop may be on it's way out but it's albums like this that will make me fondly remember the days when I was just another sweaty body in a sea of happy, sweaty people.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Muscles - Ice Cream</span><br /><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf" id="audioplayer1" height="24" width="290"><param name="movie" value="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&bg=0xf8f8f8&leftbg=0xeeeeee&lefticon=0x666666&rightbg=#3acc00&rightbghover=0x000000&righticon=0x3acc00&righticonhover=0x3acc00&text=0x666666&slider=0xcccccc&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0x666666&loader=0xCC0000&soundFile=http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/10/24/1538176/03%20Ice%20Cream.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Muscles - Sweaty</span><br /><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf" id="audioplayer1" height="24" width="290"><param name="movie" value="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&bg=0xf8f8f8&leftbg=0xeeeeee&lefticon=0x666666&rightbg=#3acc00&rightbghover=0x000000&righticon=0x3acc00&righticonhover=0x3acc00&text=0x666666&slider=0xcccccc&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0x666666&loader=0xCC0000&soundFile=http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/10/24/1538176/01%20Sweaty.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object><p></p><br /><br />(orginally posted by moi on <a href="http://bridgingtheatlantic.blogspot.com">Bridging The Atlantic</a>)dead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-87569542383836373752007-12-20T08:16:00.000-08:002007-12-20T10:20:53.026-08:00Mix Tapes: Best of 07<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.boingboing.net/images/_media_photo_2007-06_30468245-1.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px;" src="http://www.boingboing.net/images/_media_photo_2007-06_30468245-1.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />So I'm sitting here waiting for my university to pick up their effing phones because they somehow obliterated me off their records...even though I was registered by the time of my exams..<br /><br /><br />ANYWAYS BACK TO THE MUSIC<br /><br />so this year end stuff is obviously the main topic on anyones mind and i'm no different. recently my merry band of snob friends held our annual "Best of" mix tape party and it was a wild success! everyone came in with their cds and many of them had tracks and artists which even the snobiest of snobs never heard of. No more fighting, no more greed, no more of Stings ego. The police come back, play a few sold out arenas all of the planet and bask in their glory. But not only do old classics rise from the dead...But in 2007, the new music starts start away. The Shins release their third LP Wincing the Night Away. The Good, the Bad and the Queen release their debut album The Good, the Bad and the Queen. The band is Damion Albarn's newest project after the break up of (and I might cry) the Gorillaz. I guess the break up is somewhat ok though...because they did leave us with the memory of Demon Days. The album carries alot of the ideas and sounds that the Gorillaz were also exploring.<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(0, 153, 0);font-size:130%;" >Best Albums</span><br /></div><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdpYss5NVJZk4HZJzH-pLOjq8m8ZMHTYgrKaTnOeCEKwZ1ILq4ovT8Xalg6CDMAgFtMc-miH_zVr-BYprgH2A4m1thi6y5AaFZc1sCGG724zVJsEuCgTe17YA4bYjkZ8eBewc1nN9MGJGC/s1600-h/menomena.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdpYss5NVJZk4HZJzH-pLOjq8m8ZMHTYgrKaTnOeCEKwZ1ILq4ovT8Xalg6CDMAgFtMc-miH_zVr-BYprgH2A4m1thi6y5AaFZc1sCGG724zVJsEuCgTe17YA4bYjkZ8eBewc1nN9MGJGC/s400/menomena.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143338154744960306" border="0" /></a>Menomena also released one of the best albums of the year Friend and Foe on the 23rd. But it really was to be expected. What I didn't expect though was how good the album actually would be. <span style="font-style: italic;">Weekend </span>was definitely were we start to see drummer Matt Tong experiment with a computer double. This is one of the problems with the album, where <span style="font-style: italic;">Silent Alarm </span>had furious and passionate drumming, <span style="font-style: italic;">Weekend </span>tends to feel most detached. Their debut album <span style="font-style: italic;">Funeral </span>marked the beginning of Canada's domination of the indie airways. Like Bloc Party their second disk was almost set to fail. Again, how could it live up to expectations? And again, it faltered...but only slightly. <span style="font-style: italic;">Neon Bible </span>takes what <span style="font-style: italic;">Funeral </span>started and runs with it. It's not anything fresh or exciting. But it is the Arcade Fire writing Arcade Fire songs. Whats all we wanted and thats all we got. They changed their sound only slightly enough to make the album interesting enough to listen to once and detailed enough to spin it over and over again.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" >Arcade Fire - No Cars Go</span><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf" id="audioplayer1" height="24" width="290"><param name="movie" value="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&bg=0xf8f8f8&leftbg=0xeeeeee&lefticon=0x666666&rightbg=#3acc00&rightbghover=0x000000&righticon=0x3acc00&righticonhover=0x3acc00&text=0x666666&slider=0xcccccc&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0x666666&loader=0xCC0000&soundFile=http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/10/24/1538176/10%20No%20Cars%20Go.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:100%;" >Arcade Fire - My Body is a Cage</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf" id="audioplayer1" height="24" width="290"><param name="movie" value="http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/dmuriel2/shared/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&bg=0xf8f8f8&leftbg=0xeeeeee&lefticon=0x666666&rightbg=#3acc00&rightbghover=0x000000&righticon=0x3acc00&righticonhover=0x3acc00&text=0x666666&slider=0xcccccc&track=0xFFFFFF&border=0x666666&loader=0xCC0000&soundFile=http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/10/24/1538176/11%20My%20Body%20Is%20a%20Cage.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object></span><span style="font-size:100%;"></span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWNpBa5GLua_XnqcrT_puyPcoyeocGh5td6ITj1PdJ21EQswbkzonvQWVlSpDPkdQfxA98sqKkKhDn1oSkZ7zS-C4ZkdVdSQFZRl7WRgiBS2vwCOeaHQPbB_VGszKz_O7PrM20Q2lhH-8j/s1600-h/kings+of+leon.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWNpBa5GLua_XnqcrT_puyPcoyeocGh5td6ITj1PdJ21EQswbkzonvQWVlSpDPkdQfxA98sqKkKhDn1oSkZ7zS-C4ZkdVdSQFZRl7WRgiBS2vwCOeaHQPbB_VGszKz_O7PrM20Q2lhH-8j/s400/kings+of+leon.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143530217092502914" border="0" /></a>The Kings of Leon's third album happens to be their first pop record. Maybe it is the sound dark dirty breakbeats with a splash of sex in a dark alleyway... Maybe it sounds like the cosmos whispering sweet nothings into your ear (while having sex in a dark alleyway). If there are two words that I could give to describe the sound of the English producer they would be sexual and spiritual.<br /><br />And like any sort of spirituality, some people just don't understand it while others do. I'm not talking about understanding in a literal sense but in an almost unconscious sense. I feel the songs will only speak to those who feel them. Now, if you haven't heard this album by the <a href="http://www.easystar.com/">Easy Star All Stars </a>than you have every right to laugh and say "it must be terrible." Funny thing is though, it's not bad. It's actually kinda amazing. Not as good (obviously) as the original Dark Side but 100% worth checking out. I thought a band covering a pivotal album in music's history was a one off and they would go back and write their own dub jams so I didn't look into the Easy Star All Stars after Dark Side. Sometimes I'm an idiot. Sometime last week a co-worker sent me on a lead to find the DUB VERSION OF OK COMPUTER.<br /><br />DUB VERSION OF OK COMPUTER.<br /><br />It was almost more difficult to believe in that than the Dark Side album. And while Dark Side was almost on par with the original album in terms of awesome-ness, Ok Computer falls short. The dub just doesn't work as well on this album as it did on Dark Side. BUT DONT GET ME WRONG. It is <span style="font-size:130%;">DEFINITELY</span> worth looking into.<br /><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/413789">Easy Star All Stars - Airbag</a><br /><a href="http://download.yousendit.com/54A9B2C778276550">Easy Star All Stars - Karma Police</a>dead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-46035989561957641602007-11-30T09:32:00.001-08:002007-11-30T23:34:27.482-08:00A Fucked Up Holiday Season<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGK2udE_vTfLWwuqCSpz2JL0IhibhxJROckLdOdnWOwgdZzEFCRrPyns5yQwVLXL1ROmxyTrzV7OS84uN7IHC2b0O7cXBjFzpQZ3GJlmLsfEjUoyFfzhFzgm9JsqC6_jfCJ9ZK2ZkJ_j_M/s1600-r/bio_photo.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcM7z81MHpz4fTvLc7HjvMHyEe91mJ6Ng9VquJj6W0Gbco1X5yyCcXHrh3nONr6xJh9dWV38gIzCnlINA0_21k4AwaFAnP_qkqtR3ltQvtHFtIgIbSCV_tggtQ3Wn8aOQV7QOegOI_GVyV/s320/bio_photo.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138692029095931042" border="0" /></a><br />So when it recently came to my attention that one of my favorite Canadian punk bands, <a href="http://www.jadetree.com/bands/artist/fucked_up">Fucked Up</a>, was releasing an album sometime in the new year I decided to look into it a bit.<br /><br />I never really go digging when I look for music, so it was new to me... yeah...right.<br /><br />Anyways, I didn't really find much info on the new album but I found something that was a little more relevant to the season. One winter I worked at a Toys R' Us and all they played was "<a href="http://hypem.com/track/428610">Do They Know It's Christmas</a>".That shits ingrained into my mind yo. But now our little Canadian punk band wants to make their own little Christmas time jingle. Oh, yeah, they brought some of their friends too...<br /><br />...actually, alot of them. Their ranks include:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.lcdsoundsystem.com/">LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy</a>, <a href="http://www.vicerecords.com/blacklips.php">Black Lips' Cole Alexander</a>, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.thefaint.com/">the Faint's Jacob Thiele</a>, <a href="http://www.chromeo.net/site-nofl.html">Chromeo's Dave One</a>, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.afireinside.net/">AFI's Davey Havok</a>, <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.attackinblack.com/">Attack in Black's Dan Romano</a> and my personal favorite: <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.nellyfurtado.com/">Nelly Furtado</a>.<br /><br />So this mega selling, Africa saving single goes on sale at Toronto's <a href="http://www.sonicboommusic.com/">Sonic Boom Records</a> on Dec 15th where the band will also preform some covers of yer favorite Christmas Carols. Plus all proceeds from the single will be donated to the <a href="http://www.georgehermanhouse.ca/" target="_blank">George Herman House</a> which is a very respectable and reputable charity in the Toronto area that helps mentally disabled women. Which is good.<br /><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/428610">Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas</a><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/393070">Fucked Up - Baiting the Public</a><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/426239">Fucked Up - Stress (Justice Cover)</a>dead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-44289996791562166752007-11-30T09:02:00.000-08:002007-11-30T12:11:08.020-08:00Portishead: April Release???<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4cRMfNpLsH3Ih8M3DGcTYdu5ojbuXa7BsVeRYg6DpPGz2tR7VMtIRZlZNqPfT0Pv_Z09LK9EQ75AjGPPzGloyGS4kH-YfLS5n8rUceL1pEIXuRrBLW3Ddb5qU4-63a8bYzbyL27Xzusgr/s1600-r/84_Portishead_L070806.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5i_ytd5btj83WOvvLiWMYf-NZSnX0Qm-1ymZ__cTR3NXTfj-eqJwxZKhpawhvs_gsmc2xqfxTnH3OnXnXodynOaiboRpAAaDsMK0JY-wLGmpO6LFhdcNf2HgSzZN1MYcazFuhMZM_Pl76/s320/84_Portishead_L070806.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138685041184140434" border="0" /></a><br />So finally after a decade of waiting <a href="http://www.portishead.co.uk/">Portishead</a> have set the release day for their third LP release. Why did they wait so long you might ask? Well a lot of label problems apparently. Their original label Go! Beat was bought out by Polygram which then, as we all know, was acquired by Universal. At this point is was over 5 years since Portisheads last record and Universal figured that their appeal had diminished greatly.<br /><br />Oh how little the Majors know....<br /><br />At the beginning of this year, Feb 25th to be exact, Portishead played their first show at a small Bristol pub. Although the show was a secret show, the response to it was overwhelming. Hearing Beth's trembling and broken voice is a light through the dark veil of modern pop music. Great pop songs aren't only written by the glamorous and glitzy. Will trip-hop make a come back? And when the fuck will <a href="http://massiveattack.com/">Massive Attack</a> release another record aswell?<br /><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/257499">Portishead - Only You</a><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/322795">Massive Attack - Karmacoma (Portishead Experience)</a>dead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-48475745623583013762007-11-27T20:10:00.000-08:002007-11-27T20:48:27.469-08:00heartbreakers.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik-hXfb8PXaLB7YzXjUXdHcEYBjsBEHKyznnx4ei7lOyJhCyn8LUHZXf6mR0c3UduyuUGIkH41FpndbeiDnGrRcpHR4RJHsRbhZII4caqt6L9amavXNV4DTDjrSt-4zkQrmPDJ2lOjZ4M/s1600-h/soundsofsalvation.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137743951930426050" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik-hXfb8PXaLB7YzXjUXdHcEYBjsBEHKyznnx4ei7lOyJhCyn8LUHZXf6mR0c3UduyuUGIkH41FpndbeiDnGrRcpHR4RJHsRbhZII4caqt6L9amavXNV4DTDjrSt-4zkQrmPDJ2lOjZ4M/s320/soundsofsalvation.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>the number of bands that have broken my heart out number boys by approximately one million to none. i know bands don’t last forever. they break up. artists “grow,” move on to other things, new things, and occasionally better things.<br /><br />i’m not quite over the loss of <a href="http://www.acceptancerock.com/"><strong>Acceptance</strong></a>, and i doubt that i ever will be. but there are other ex-bands which I am willing to talk about. time heals some wounds.<br /><br /><strong><a href="http://www.myspace.com/northstar">Northstar</a></strong> were one of my late 90’s emo-indie rock staples. between "Is This Thing Loaded," and "Pollyanna," they had a pretty good run.<br /><br />they have long since disbanded, but Nicolas Torres along with Tyler Odem moved on to a different and wonderful project. <strong><a href="http://www.cassinoband.com/soundsofsalvation.asp">Cassino</a></strong> is quite the departure from their upbeat-emo past. (hello oxymoron.) the genuine acoustic/folk sound executed by this band provides a seemless guide for Nic’s distinct vocals. The Gorillaz mixed dub, hip hop and brit pop almost perfectly and I love them for it. Surprisingly though the animated four piece makes their best music when they strip down all the dub and hip hop elements and opt for a more worldly sound. Hong Kong is the perfect example of how music has evolved and bands have seamlessly integrated sounds and instruments from far away lands into western pop music.<br /><br />Also it's interesting to watch Damon perform this song off the "Gorillaz Live" dvd. The performance similarities between himself and his brit peer, Thom Yorke, are striking.<br /><br />Hong Kong is the kinda song that I will play for my children and say, "This is when it was done right."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/%27http://hypem.com/track/425323%27">Gorillaz - Kids With Guns (Hot Chip Remix)</a><br /><a href="http://www.blogger.com/%27http://hypem.com/track/424127%27">Gorillaz - Latin Simone (Original version)</a><br /><br />Gorillaz - Hong Kong<br /><object height="355" width="425"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WqsAiP0m8bo&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="355" width="425"></embed></object><br /><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damon_Albarn" title="Damon Albarn"></a>dead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-28921234283420138812007-11-21T21:03:00.000-08:002007-11-22T07:26:12.619-08:00Hello! How how fun is Junior Seniors latest album Hey Hey My My Yo Yo? oodles. Yes sir, this album reaks of fun and if your not having fun while listening to this record...I'm sorry my friend, you have no childhood. ^_^<br /><br />It seems the Netherlands are a source of inspiration for a couple stand out artists this year. Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes wrote half of Hissing Fauna in Norway. Junior Senior is from Denmark; pretty interesting huh? The album came out in '05...so I might be a little late on this one.<br /><br />But this is the opening track off the akbum...live...someone come to their show with me?<br /><br /><a href='http://hypem.com/track/382487'>Junior Senior - We R the Handclaps</a><br /><a href='http://hypem.com/track/363602'>Junior Senior - Hip Hop a Lula</a><br /><br />Junior Senior - Hip Hop A Lula (LIVE)<br /><object height="355" width="425"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/xU2JmpPVVcU&rel=1"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/xU2JmpPVVcU&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="355" width="425"></embed></object>dead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-78422044491257234392007-11-08T21:46:00.000-08:002007-11-08T22:41:35.406-08:00a captive audience.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXtEss_S2ZQk18GC6BHuLzXE1RKEn8XCOSpkR-W9mfSRfcbZHDiLgUTL2fxU8J55nAJ7nfJJEeBcmAO4wZ1jfmt3baOftvH7nwj7Irstlw4ixjwuFuYCl26pVqpdJyegENVo3qXEJ1i-g/s1600-h/light.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130719689218931538" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXtEss_S2ZQk18GC6BHuLzXE1RKEn8XCOSpkR-W9mfSRfcbZHDiLgUTL2fxU8J55nAJ7nfJJEeBcmAO4wZ1jfmt3baOftvH7nwj7Irstlw4ixjwuFuYCl26pVqpdJyegENVo3qXEJ1i-g/s320/light.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />i gladly forwent a bed, sleep, and my city to see <strong><a href="http://www.thevelvetteen.com/">The Velvet Teen</a></strong> open for <a href="http://www.sayhitoyourmom.com/"><strong>Say Hi</strong></a> along with the <a href="http://www.a-sides.net/"><strong>A-Sides</strong></a> in Montreal. the venue was the smallest and coolest i’ve ever been to. walls of stone and arched ceilings did little for acoustics, but were aesthetically beautiful. the A-Sides were a good start to the show. they began mellow but melodic and finished in an admirable rhythm.<br /><br />second on the bill were my heroes and reason for the road trip, The Velvet Teen. a short and limited set due to lack of instruments and time, they still managed to out perform any expectations i had. Guitar Hero 3 was just released and of course I had to pick myself up a copy. It had to be done. The track list is simply unreal. Paint It Back? My Name is Jonas?! For those of you who don't know, the Fall of Troy is sort of like that band that took prozac, listened to At The Drive In and picked up a 15 year old vocalist. It's good, but it has it's bad moments.<br /><br />Actually it's about 50% good/bad.<br /><br />Thats because 2005's Doppelganger is 100% amazing. While their 2007 follow up is 100% WEAK. I had the opportunity to see them play a show last week with Do Make Say Think that was auditory heaven.<br /><br />back to The Dudes...who are The Dudes? they are one of few bands i am willing to classify as legitimate rock and roll. without delving too deep into debates of genre, i will say their live show was energetic. (btw. according to Microsoft Word, full of beans is a synonym for energetic…) their sound was impeccable, and the crowd loved every minute of it. they were tight. the kind of band you can tell has been playing with each other long enough to sound like gold, but not long enough that they don’t care anymore. mostly playing upbeat and danceable tracks, even slower songs like Don’t Talk came across louder and heavier than the album version. The Dudes recorded sound translated into a kicking live show. the combination of witty lyrics and range in mood let every song stand on its own.<br /><br />the interaction between crowd and band culminated during the encore. covering the legendary Bob Dylan is no easy feat, but they covered I Shall Be Released and well. The Dudes extended an invitation to all lyric-knowing audience members to join them on stage for the song. two souls were brave enough to step up. the rest of the audience danced, danced and danced, compelling the band to play their last, last song. all in all, a great show and a great night. i’m glad i got up off the couch.<br /><br />so say The Dudes,</div><br /><div><br />i heart rock and roll. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=DA857C113D5DD104">The Dudes - Drop Kick Queen Of The Weekend</a><br /><a href="http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=96A47D3C32B20A6D">The Dudes - Do The Right Thing</a><br /><a href="http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=4E831CAC7C83EED3">Bob Dylan - I Shall Be Released</a></div>jashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12371627465717022190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-21204554748252489892007-10-26T06:50:00.000-07:002007-10-26T07:04:15.182-07:00My Name Is Rivers, I'm Carrying My Band.<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Y53yo8PZ4Aj28hEK4ehOS3MbucKlDFgWEfAkAna0sK8t68C1EdgOb4SjeWTHPf939BQBA-X61J_Pduk7k4j6eJO5uEFhmnls4_v2FX8yQZKKfbjaGXtJfwGzwCa3iL8S8LKUtkXXZ671/s1600-h/weezer.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Y53yo8PZ4Aj28hEK4ehOS3MbucKlDFgWEfAkAna0sK8t68C1EdgOb4SjeWTHPf939BQBA-X61J_Pduk7k4j6eJO5uEFhmnls4_v2FX8yQZKKfbjaGXtJfwGzwCa3iL8S8LKUtkXXZ671/s320/weezer.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125645728005961778" border="0" /></a><br /></div><br />So uh, in contrary to popular belief <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.weezer.com">Weezer</a> is not broken up. In fact, after over a decade of giving classrooms full of nerds hope that one day they could be a rockstar too, Weezer is set to release it's sixth full length studio album. Apparently this one is supposed to be good? It's really hard to tell if this album is going to be better than their past 4 failed efforts to relive the glory days of the Blue and Pink. Now for all of us who have been following the Weezer story we can probably expect the same 4 chord songs and chant alongs, but this time might be a little different.<br /><br />They bought a synth.<br /><br />Yup, coming out of left field Rivers decided it would be an amazing idea to add a synth to their formulaic rock sound. So we ditched the low-brow scene for intelligent rap and brilliant live performances by MC Shad and his band.<br />The Mod Club was packed when we arrived. We were just slightly too late to see <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://myspace.com/grandanalog">Grand Analog's</a> set, which is unfortunate because I was looking forward to hearing live versions of their upbeat flowing melodies from their album, Calligraffiti. But the crowd was buzzing with energy when Shad took the stage in a signature Burger King crown. Known for his insightful and humerous freestyles, Shad took no time at all getting his audience's hands up and bodies rocking out to funky drum beats, slippery bass lines and unbelievable trumpet solos. Have you ever heard a trumpet channelled through a wawa pedal? It's like Tom Morello meets Dizzy Gillespie; vibrant, sporatic and powerful. With a DJ on the one's and two's and some freestyle beatboxing, the sound was full but not overpowering or dominated by a single voice.<br />Taking it down in tempo near the end of the set, Shad plucked an acoustic and poetically navigated his way through a track for his family, who have recently returned to Ethiopia. Although initially a solo performance, violins, trumpet and bass slowly crept in and carried the melody to higher grounds of excitement. Following this, Shad dropped a freestyle accompanied by beatboxing and let his band carry the sound before making his exedous from the stage.<br />A great show by a great MC. Shad has the potential to take Canadian hip hop in new directions and last nights performace was just one showcase of that.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-81151581176289477672007-10-24T22:48:00.001-07:002007-10-24T22:50:55.336-07:00Just In Time For Halloween<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitApTmT-R6jPwGAqPglMXEDg9UXXkMHmEojkCSOHpe7hq3YsDPi94gOg2xlVyZ33UK_Y1PMrX524iRXlK2Ci9VnQnTe7WuxghXg2-_4wtFm7GGxgGmVLi94qU3Zn-ob7CSTkunAwyNrAt5/s1600-h/mj.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitApTmT-R6jPwGAqPglMXEDg9UXXkMHmEojkCSOHpe7hq3YsDPi94gOg2xlVyZ33UK_Y1PMrX524iRXlK2Ci9VnQnTe7WuxghXg2-_4wtFm7GGxgGmVLi94qU3Zn-ob7CSTkunAwyNrAt5/s320/mj.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125147382950606882" border="0" /></a><br /></div><br />Alright even though <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.michaeljackson.com/">Michael Jackson</a> turned into the craziest mother fucker I have ever seen he is and always will be the king of pop. <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.justintimberlake.com/">JT</a> is ONLY the prince. (fork and knife), otherwise known as demo 7 or The Piano Song, underwent some lyric changes, and the addition of a stellar bridge. it’s different, produced, enjoyable. keeping the melodic piano progressions and hint of hollow drums, the mix gives the track more depth. the clarified vocals give the lyrics more meaning and the song more balance.<br /></span></div><br /><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">another demo-friendly band is <a href="http://www.jimmyeatworld.com/"><span style="color:#33cc00;"><strong>Jimmy Eat World</strong></span></a>. they released a dual disc of both the mixed and demo versions on their last studio album Futures. prior to the release of their new album Chase This Light, i was privy to a demo version. while the album is not Clarity, and i’m starting to believe none of their albums ever will be, there are some very addictive tracks, some extremely radio friendly ones, and one or two hidden gems. an instrumental demo titled Gotta Be Somebody’s Blues was definitely one of those gems. i had hoped it would remain instrumental, however it was given a voice in the end. to my surprise, the vocal additions actually made the track more epic. i have room in my heart for two versions, and am glad i had the opportunity to hear both. </span></div><br /><div><span style="color:#ffffff;">i love the mix, but long live the demo.</span></div><br /><br /><a href="http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/10/24/1538176/01%20(Fork%20and%20Knife).mp3"><span style="color:#33cc00;">brand new - (fork and knife)</span></a><span style="color:#33cc00;"><br /></span><a href="http://download.yousendit.com/18CD676F58BB2729"><span style="color:#33cc00;">jimmy eat world - gotta be somebody's blues (demo)</span></a><span style="color:#33cc00;"><br /></span><a href="http://download.yousendit.com/91D607CC6AB7E048"><span style="color:#33cc00;">jimmy eat world - gotta be somebody's blues (album version)</span></a>jashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12371627465717022190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-127262230993821984.post-89742328213492101972007-10-24T06:53:00.000-07:002007-10-24T07:14:09.312-07:00Radiohead to "join" ATO Records?<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMQZQFfBhmw2AZCtC0sWX2twd06WWEltyYvRB-41OG9ptllwO_uLc7KacMXsnEmalI2sL4iows8YNhQyFW9hZu8aCZkcPW1MN1MnN1ZSRW9fqrQMC8WvstAAHaXC5EBOLH8e-WsmdQ_MDo/s1600-h/radiohead.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMQZQFfBhmw2AZCtC0sWX2twd06WWEltyYvRB-41OG9ptllwO_uLc7KacMXsnEmalI2sL4iows8YNhQyFW9hZu8aCZkcPW1MN1MnN1ZSRW9fqrQMC8WvstAAHaXC5EBOLH8e-WsmdQ_MDo/s320/radiohead.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5124904581533364706" border="0" /></a><br /></div><br />After hitting us with what has to be the most talked about marketing tactic of 2007 our friends from outer space, <a href="http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace/"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Radiohead</span></a>, have decided to get us talking some more...by allegedly entering into a distribution deal with <a href="http://www.dmband.com/"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Dave Matthew</span></a>'s record label <a href="http://www.atorecords.com/">ATO</a>. Apparently this deal would let Radiohead keep complete ownership over their latest and greatest (since Kid A) record, <span style="font-style: italic;">In Rainbows, </span>while ATO would distribute across America.<br /><br />All that being said, both sides have neither denied or confirmed the rumour. Their records are intricate and epic while their live shows are fresh and powerful. Besides being hailed as the best thing to happen to the Canadian rock scene since...uh...Nickleback, they're managed to keep it mainstream while keeping their indie following strong. When I heard the Fire were touring with <a style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://www.myspace.com/lcdsoundsystem">LCD Soundsystem</a> the news was a bit bittersweet. It was sweet because two of 2007's best artists were playing shows together but bitter because those tickets would sell out faster than <span style="font-weight: bold;">Britney Spears</span> playing the Reverb. But I also caught wind that the two would be releasing a split EP of covers. Two standout tracks are definitely Arcade Fire's cover of the classic <span style="font-style: italic;">Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son </span>and LCD Soundsystems take on <span style="font-weight: bold;">Joy Divisions</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">No Love Lost. </span>Both tracks are stellar - which one is better? Thats up to you.<br /><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/405579">Arcade Fire - Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son</a><br /><a href="http://hypem.com/track/403031">LCD Soundsystem - No Love Lost</a>dead labelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08252412271220610692noreply@blogger.com
